Professor Fumiko Takeda
Associate Professor of Applied Economics at the University of Tokyo
For our February 2018 member of the month the IAES welcomes Associate Professor Fumiko Takeda. Before joining the University of Tokyo, Professor Takeda was an Associate Professor of Economics at Yokohama City University. Professor Takeda has held visiting positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Alberta, and Yale University. In 2001, Professor Takeda received her Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University.
Why did you become a member of the International Atlantic Economic Society?
I became a member when I received an invitation from Professor Peter van der Hoek to submit a paper for the 2016 spring conference in Lisbon. The timing of the conference was perfect, as it was during the spring break in Japan. Since then I attended again in 2017 and look forward to attending this spring, 2018. In the meetings, I have had wonderful opportunities to learn from enthusiastic economists and distinguished speakers in many areas of research.
What types of projects/research are you currently working on and what inspired/motivated you to pursue these interests?
I usually conduct empirical research in the areas of business economics, finance, and accounting. Previously, I tended to examine how a firm’s value is affected by scandals such as accounting frauds, nuclear power plant accidents and flaming on the internet (i.e., posting abusive messages on the internet) because I wished to prevent disastrous outcomes arising from misconduct. Now, I concentrate on more forward-looking research by investigating how capital markets react to corporate decisions including mergers and acquisitions, sports sponsorship, and changes in accounting standards. I sit on the Editorial Review Board of The International Journal of Accounting and serve as Associate Editor for Electronic Commerce Research and Applications, and The Japanese Accounting Review.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering entering your line of work/field of study?
I would like to advise young people to pursue ways to stay connected with society or business. It will prevent them from working on abstract propositions and encourage them to root their research in the real world.
Going forward, what other projects/research are you looking to or hoping to pursue?
I am hoping to analyze how technologies will change a firm’s behavior and values. Currently, I am collecting ideas related to financial technologies and artificial intelligence.
What’s your favorite hobby?
I am a registered yoga teacher of Yoga Alliance in Hatha Flow.
