The 85th International Atlantic Economic Conference held in London, on 14-17 March, 2018 brought together economists and finance experts from all around the world to discuss the economic issues of the past, present and future. This year’s conference featured an amazing group of presenters, including Professor Hélène Rey who gave the 2018 Robert A. Mundell Distinguished Address and Sir Timothy Besley who delivered the 2018 Invited Address. Hélène Rey, 2018 Robert A. Mundell Distinguished Address:
Hélène Rey is the Lord Bagri Professor of Economics at London Business School. Her research focuses on the determinants and consequences of external trade and financial imbalances, the theory of financial crises and the organization of the international monetary system. She demonstrated in particular that countries gross external asset positions helps predict current account adjustments and the exchange rate. Professor Rey is an elected Fellow of the British Academy, the Econometric Society, the European Economic Association and the American Academy of the Arts and Sciences. She was made Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for service to economics. Professor Rey received her PhDs from the London School of Economics and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales.

Sir Timothy Besley, 2018 Keynote Invited Address:
“State Capacity and the Social Contract”
Sir Timothy Besley is Professor of Economics and Political Science and W. Arthur Lewis Professor of Development Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He is a fellow of the Econometric Society, the British Academy, and the European Economic Association. His policy-focused research is mainly in development economics, public economics and political economy. From September 2006 to August 2009, he served as an external member of the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee and since 2015 has been a member of the UK’s National Infrastructure Commission. He was the President of the International Economic Association and served as President of the European Economic Association in 2010. He is the current 2018 President of the Econometric Society. Sir Besley, won the Yrjö Jahnsson Award in 2005 of the European Association, granted every other year to an economist under 45 years of age who has made a significant contribution to economics in Europe.
