“The Future of Europe and of the Euro” Plenary Symposium:
Chair: Gordon Brady is a Consultant and former Senior Economist of the U.S. Senate Joint Economic Committee. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the International Atlantic Economic Society, and a member of the Board of Editors of the Atlantic Economic Journal. He has published numerous papers and books. His work involves climate change legislation and public choice models of government growth.
Mario Baldassarri, President of Centro Studi Economia Reale and Emeritus Professor at Sapienza University of Rome. He was a member of the Italian government as Vice-Minister of Economy and Finance (2001-2006), and elected as Senator of the Italian Republic (2006-2013). He is the author of several books and scientific publications on a wide range of economic issues, theoretical analyses and empirical evidence of the role of government.
Francesco Forte is Emeritus Professor at Sapienza University of Rome. He was Minister of Finance, European Affairs and Foreign Aid of the Italian Government (1982-1983) and a former Senator and Chairman of the Finance and Treasury Committee of the Italian Senate. He also is a former President of the International Atlantic Economic Society (1984-1985) and current member of the Board of Editors of the International Advances in Economic Research. He has authored numerous publications on public and political economics.
Paolo Savona is Emeritus Professor at the Guido Carli Free International University of Social Studies (LUISS) in Rome. He was General Manager of the Italian Confederation of Industry, has held top positions in several leading private Italian companies and banks, and served as Italy’s Minister of Industry, Commerce and Handicraft (1993-1994). He is author of many publications on monetary and financial economics and foundations of structural differences in productivity.
Mario Monti, 2015 Robert A. Mundell Distinguished Address:
Mario Monti is President of Bocconi University, Milan. He is Chairman of the high-level Group on Own Resources of the European Union, of the Council on the Future of Europe of the Berggruen Institute on Governance, and Honorary Chairman of Bruegel, a European think-tank. He was Prime Minister of Italy (2011-2013). He served for ten years as a member of the European Commission, in charge of the Internal Market, Financial Services and Tax Policy (1995-1999), then of Competition (1999-2004). Born in Varese, Italy, in 1943, he graduated from Bocconi University and pursued graduate studies at Yale University. Prior to joining the European Commission, he was Professor of Economics and Rector at Bocconi.
Charles Calomiris, Presidential Address
Charles Calomiris is Henry Kaufman Professor of Financial Institutions at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business, a Professor at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs, and current President of the International Atlantic Economic Society. He is a member of the Shadow Open Market Committee and the Financial Economists Roundtable, and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Calomiris holds a Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University. His research spans several areas, including banking, corporate finance, financial history, and monetary economics.
Luigi Zingales, Invited Address
Luigi Zingales is Robert McCormick Distinguished Service Professor of Entrepreneurship and Finance at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and President of the American Finance Association. Zingales’ research interests include corporate governance, financial development, political economy and the economic effects of culture. His research earned him the 2002 Nasdaq Award for best paper in capital formation, the 2003 Bernácer Prize for the best young European financial economist, and in 2012 he was named by Foreign Policy magazine to its list of FP Top 100 Global Thinkers. Zingales holds a Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Vaclav Klaus, Invited Address
Václav Klaus is a Czech economist and politician who served as the President (2003-2013) and Prime Minister (1992-1998) of the Czech Republic. Prior to his Presidency, Klaus served as minister of finance (1989–92) and became involved in the Civil Forum Movement, an organization he ultimately chaired in 1990. In 1991, he co-founded and chaired the Civic Democratic Party. Klaus holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Institute of Economics of the Czech Academy of Sciences and has published more than 20 books.
“European Banking Crisis” Plenary Symposium:
Chair: Charles Calomiris is Henry Kaufman Professor of Financial Institutions at Columbia Business School, Visiting Fellow at the International Monetary Fund, and current President of the International Atlantic Economic Society. His research includes banking, corporate finance, and monetary economics.
Sascha Steffen is an Associate Professor at the European School of Management and Technology. Prior to joining academia, he worked in credit risk management related areas at Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt and New York. His research in the area of empirical financial intermediation and banking, has been supported by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the German Research Foundation.
Florian Heider Florian Heider is a Principal Economist in the Financial Research Division of the European Central Bank in Frankfurt, Germany. Prior to the ECB, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Finance at the Stern School of Business, New York University and a Research Fellow at the Financial Markets Group, London School of Economics. His research focuses on banking and corporate finance.
Aurore Burietz Aurore Burietz is a French Economist and works at the IESEG School of Management. Burietz holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Picardie, Jules Verne, and was a visiting scholar at Columbia University in
2013. Her research interests include banking, financial institutions and sovereign debt crises.
