Philadelphia 2023 Conference Recap

The 96th International Atlantic Economic Conference was held in Philadelphia, PA, October 5-8, 2023 and brought together economists and finance experts from around the world to discuss the economic issues of the past, present, and future. It was the official celebration of the International Atlantic Economic Society’s 50th Anniversary!

This year’s conference featured a Presidental Address by Harald Uhlig titled “On Digital Currencies”, as well as the plenary panel “The Roads To Monetary Stability”(organized by Robert Z. Aliber), and the 19th annual Best Undergraduate Paper Award Competition.

Presidental Address:

On Digital Currencies

Harald Uhlig, University of Chicago, U.S.A

Harald Uhlig is the Bruce Allen and Barbara Ritzenthaler Professor in Economics and the College in the Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics at the University of Chicago.  Harald has been a member of the Economics department since 2007 and served as the department Chairman from 2009 – 2012. Previously, he held positions at Princeton University, Tilburg University and the Humboldt Universität Berlin. His research interests are in macroeconomics, financial markets and Bayesian econometrics, and in particular at the intersection of these three.

Among Harald’s many accomplishments, he served as Co-Editor of Econometrica from 2006 to 2010, and is currently the Managing Editor of the Journal of Political Economy (JPE) since July 2013. He is a consultant of the Bundesbank and the Bank for International Settlements.  He chaired the CEPR European Business Cycle Dating Committee from 2005 to 2012 and he is a member of the NBER.

Robert Z. Aliber, University of Chicago, U.S.A.

Robert Z. Aliber is Professor Emeritus of International Economics and Finance at the University of Chicago. He is best known for his contribution to the theory of foreign direct investment. Dr. Aliber received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Williams College (1952), a Bachelor of Arts (1954) and a Master of Arts (1957) from Cambridge University and his Ph. D. from Yale University. He has consulted for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and testified before Congress. He has written extensively about currency pricing shock, exchange rates, financial crises, and international banking relationships. He is probably best known for predicting the Icelandic financial crisis several years before it occurred.


Nicholas Sargen, Fort Washington Investment Advisors—U.S.A.

Nicholas Sargen is Senior Economic Advisor for Fort Washington Investment Advisors. In former roles, Dr. Sargen served as both Chief Economist and Chief Investment Officer and was responsible for overseeing the investment activity for all assets under management for Fort Washington and its division and subsidiaries. Prior to joining Fort Washington in June 2003, Dr. Sargen previously served as Managing Director for JP Morgan Chase in New York.

 

 


Sigridur Benediktsdottir, Yale University—U.S.A

Sigrídur Benediktsdottir is a senior lecturer and assistant dean for undergraduate education at the Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs. Dr. Benediktsdottir is also on the board of Landsbankinn hf., an Icelandic commercial bank. She was Director, Financial Stability Department, Central Bank of Iceland from 2012-2016 and a member of the Danish Systemic Risk Council.

 

 

 

 


Gylfi Zoëga, University of Iceland—Iceland, and University of London, United Kingdom

Gylfi Zoëga is the University of Iceland Fellow and Senior Lecturer, Birkbeck College University of London. His areas of specialization are macroeconomics and labor economics. He is affiliated with the Monetary Policy Committee–Central Bank of Iceland as an External Member. Among his numerous articles, several are co-authored with Nobel laureate Edmund Phelps, in particular a book on structural slumps. He has been an active contributor to economic policy debates in Iceland.
